BREAK THE SILENCE OF NOISE POLLUTION

Ever heard about Noise Pollution? Perhaps not. Noise pollution refers to the harmful or disturbing effects of excessive noise in the environment, typically caused by human activities. In EU, 1 of 5 (or 100 million citizens) are exposed to unhealthy levels of noise.

Excessive noise can have serious consequences on human health and the environment. Health impacts include increased stress levels, hearing loss, sleep disturbances, and even cardiovascular issues. Long-term exposure to noise pollution has been linked to chronic diseases and mental health problems. Wildlife is also affected, as animals depend on sound for communication, navigation, and detecting threats, excessive noise can disrupt these activities.

Noise caused by transport is considered the second most significant environmental cause of ill health in Western Europe, behind the fine particulate matter pollution.

The need for noise reduction and regulation is now being called to action by the European Green Deal, EU's roadmap for a sustainable economy, making Europe climate neutral in 2050. The Zero Pollution Action Plan towards zero pollution for air, water and soil is a strategy how to reduce the share of people chronically disturbed by transport noise by 30% by 2030.

Hence, many cities are implementing noise regulation laws to mitigate its impact on residents and wildlife. These actions highlight a growing momentum across Europe to tackle noise pollution, improve the quality of urban environments, and promote healtiher living conditions.

It is not to undermine the impact of how noise affects our mental and physical heatlth. The way we experience sound affects us constantly - day and night - and it's crucial that we address this phenomenon.
